It was reorganized into an armoured regiment in 1963. The regiment's soldiers were originally recruited on the island of Gotland, and it was later garrisoned there. == History == The regiment has its origins in the unit Gotlands nationalbeväring which was created in 1811. That unit was reformed into two separate units, Gotlands infanteriregemente and Gotlands artillerikår, in 1887 and the infantry regiment gained the designation I 27 (27th Infantry Regiment). It was reorganised as the battalion size unit Gotlands infanterikår with the new designation I 18 in 1928. It got its regimental name back in 1937.
